If you stream video content often, you’ll love this new Play Store feature

If you love streaming movies and television shows on your phone, tablet, or computer, the one big problem you might encounter is finding out which platform a television show or movie can be found on. There are so many different platforms: Peacock, Disney+, Discovery, Paramount+, Netflix, Max, Pluto TV, and Amazon Prime to name a few. The Google Play Store is adding a card that will show you when and where a show you’re interested in will be streamed.

Google has published a blog post discussing this new feature found in the Play Store. Open the Play Store app and tap on the Search tab at the bottom of the screen, it’s the one with the icon that looks like a magnifying glass. Tap in the name of the movie or TV show you want to stream, rent, or buy. The “Where to watch” card is rolling out now although it has yet to appear on my Pixel 6 Pro running on Android 16 QPR2 Beta 3.3.

The example used by Google in the blog post shows a search for the HBO television series “The Last of Us.” The screen shot displayed by Google reveals that the show can be streamed on HBO Max, viewed on YouTube TV: Live, and streamed on Prime Video. No pricing appears on the card. While that would be important information for Google to share, it also could be hard to add because of the various subscription tiers that streamers offer.

The card does include a button for each app showing your content. This allows you to install on your device each streaming service listed for a particular show or movie and also shows the ratings that a show received on each platform. These ratings can vary widely. For example, “The Last of Us” received 4.8 stars on HBO Max, 3.9 on YouTube TV: Live, and 4.0 for Prime Video. Perhaps a single rating from a well-respected service such as IMDb would be more useful.

Since the Google Play Store is an Android app storefront, we shouldn’t be so surprised that the main goal of what Google is giving us here is a way to find and install video streaming apps for Android users. If this were more than just an app discovery feature, Google could have added the day and time each show is streamed over the platform shown. At the same time, Google could have given the user an opportunity to set an alarm or notification to remind the user that it is showtime.

Here is the name of an app that does a better job than “Where to watch”

An app that you might want to install instead of relying on “Where to watch” is the app version of the once popular TV Guide. At one time, TV Guide was one of the most popular weekly magazines with a circulation of 20 million copies per week. As of last year, the circulation is down to 900,000 copies distributed weekly.

The TV Guide app (iOS|Android) shows similar information as “Where to watch,” but is more intent on linking you to the show than having you install an app. For example, if you tap on the button showing the name of a platform where you can find the content you want to see, the TV Guide app will take you to the website version of platform from where you can sign in to view the show or movie, or subscribe to the platform.

The TV Guide app will also show you listings for broadcast channels and cable systems in your area.

As for the Play Store’s “Where to watch,” this new card just might come in handy that one cold night this winter when your fireplace is radiating warmth and there is something specific you’re in the mood to watch only you don’t know which platform it is on.

Is this the Moto X70 Air or the Motorola Edge 70?

If that’s the case and Blass managed to get his hands on official promotional material for the Motorola Edge 70 already, the chances of seeing the phone take on the aforementioned Galaxy S25 Edge and iPhone Air in countries like India, various European markets, and perhaps even the US in 2025 are all of a sudden pretty solid.

Now, you have to remember that the “regular” Edge 70 is widely expected to follow in the footsteps of the Edge 60 with mid-range specifications and an affordable price, although if this device is in the pipeline, higher-end Pro and Ultra variants could also be coming relatively soon.
While there are no reasons to question the legitimacy of the promo video leaked by Evan Blass due to the weight of that name in the mobile tech journalism space, we’re clearly dealing with an unfinished version of the clip lacking both sound and the text typically used by companies like Motorola to build excitement over their latest products.

That means very few technical details are etched in stone, although if you look closely, you’ll notice that the Pantone Lily Pad colorway rumored a few days ago is now essentially confirmed, and the same goes for a primary 50MP rear-facing camera with optical image stabilization.

Can Motorola provide stiff competition for Samsung and Apple?

That’s definitely way too early to tell, but the first signs are undeniably promising, starting with a vague but thrilling “sub-6mm” waist prediction from the man, the legend Evan Blass.

The iPhone Air and Galaxy S25 Edge, in case you’re wondering, currently stand at 5.6 and 5.8mm thickness respectively, so the Edge 70 could still prove ever-so-slightly “chunkier” than both its rivals.

But once again, this is unlikely to be a true rivalry, as Motorola’s first ultra-thin handset… of the last few years is almost definitely not a costly flagship. If the Edge 60 is any indication, this bad boy could be priced at around €500 ($585) in Europe with 12GB RAM, 512GB storage, and… the biggest battery that can possibly be squeezed into that sleek and elegant body.

I’m not going to make any predictions on that latter front just yet, but with the Moto G86 Power this year packing a colossal 6,720mAh cell while somehow measuring 8.7mm in thickness, the sky is clearly the limit for what kind of advantage Motorola can gain on Samsung in the battery life department.

In addition to Pantone Lily Pad, the Motorola Edge 70 is today depicted in “Gadget Gray” and “Bronze Green” hues, but even though those are all very eye-catching and nice, it’s not clear if any of them will use the company’s signature vegan leather finish or go the more conventional shiny glass route.

Just how excited should you be here?

Well, I don’t know about you, but I remain as intrigued by this device as I declared and explained last week. Of course, that’s because I’m not a particularly big fan of ultra-high-end handsets, and I know I can live with (pretty much) any mid-range processor Motorola might choose to equip the Edge 70 with.

Yes, I’d love to see the Edge 60‘s MediaTek Dimensity 7300 SoC replaced with a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset (ideally, a Snapdragon 7 Gen 4), but because that wish is unlikely to come true, I’ll just focus on dreaming of a stylish and unusually robust Edge 70 with a 5,000mAh or so battery under the hood and a sub-$500 price point in the US. I know, that’s also hard to pull off for Motorola, but not impossible. Not in my (dream) world, at least.

How do AI models generate videos?

It’s been a big year for video generation. In the last nine months OpenAI made Sora public, Google DeepMind launched Veo 3, and the video startup Runway launched Gen-4. All can produce video clips that are (almost) impossible to distinguish from actual filmed footage or CGI animation.

The Samsung video that has Steve Jobs rolling over in his grave

Without a doubt, the late Steve Jobs was not a fan of the stylus. How do we know that? Well, he made it crystal clear that day in January 2007 at Macworld when he held the iPhone aloft, introduced the new device, and literally changed the world. When discussing how users will communicate with the iPhone, he said, “Who wants a stylus? You have to get ’em, put ’em away, you lose ’em. Yuck! Nobody wants a stylus. So let’s not use a stylus.”
The first major smartphone to ship with a stylus after Jobs’ comment was the HTC Touch, which was released in June 2007. But it wasn’t until Samsung released the Galaxy Note in 2011 that the stylus became a feature. Samsung called its digital writing instrument the S Pen. Over time, the S Pen became much more powerful with capabilities not found on a regular stylus. The new S Pen  combines technology with what Samsung calls “A human-centered design.”
Samsung has released a video called “The S Pen Story” timed to accompany the release of the Galaxy Tab S11 tablet last week. In fact, all of the illustrations created for the video were produced with the S Pen and the Galaxy Tab S11. The video reveals that Samsung’s goal with the S Pen was to make it resemble the ordinary pencil. “So simple. Yet powerful,” Sammy says. As the pencil brings ideas to life, so does the S Pen. The next-gen S Pen features an enhanced grip designed to feel familiar, like a pencil.

The next-gen S Pen is optimized for drawing as the pen tip is shaped like a cone and is tilted at a greater angle, which could help users create better sketches. The harder you press, the darker the strokes. Also improved is the durability of the S Pen. Samsung has redesigned its internals, and the S Pen is stronger and more durable.

I must add that some of the comments from those who viewed the video are interesting. “You forgot to add the part where you downgrade and remove the Bluetooth features on this generation,” wrote one disgruntled S Pen user. Another wrote, “The AUDACITY to say this, after removing Bluetooth from S Pen in S25U and now Tab S11U. Ridiculous. At least give users a choice to buy it if they want it.”

The S Pen did change the way people looked at the stylus, which makes us wonder whether Steve Jobs would have been more open to a stylus with the capabilities of the S Pen. As for the Apple Pencil, well, that was released nearly four years after Jobs’ death.

Leaker posts video of “mass production” iPhone 17 Pro Max unit

The iPhone 17 series is nearing launch, and perhaps for the first time, a factory floor image has leaked, giving us a real-world look at the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

While in-the-wild photos of Android phones often show up before release, the same isn’t true for the iPhone. That’s why it’s surprising to see leaker Ice Universe post a video of the iPhone 17 Pro Max ahead of its official release.

According to machine translation, this is a “mass production” unit. This suggests that this is a retail model, though it could very well be a late-stage prototype as well.

Either way, since this video apparently comes straight from an iPhone manufacturer, it gives a better idea of what the iPhone 17 Pro Max will look like than a dummy unit. That said, this might very well be a knock-off too, so it’s best to take this rumor with a hefty dose of skepticism.The short video corroborates the iPhone 17 Pro’s horizontal camera island, the familiar camera sensor arrangements, and the relocation of the LiDAR scanner, LED flash, and microphone to the far end of the island. The rumored black, gray, and white variants can presumably be seen in the clip. The screen is covered by a protective sheet, and we don’t get to see the phone in action.

An iPhone 17 Pro was previously spotted in late July in San Francisco, when an Apple employee was seen testing the device.

Another leaker from China has also shared some intel on the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. Setsuna Digital, also known as Instant Digital, says that the devices will be able to retain high brightness levels for longer periods of time in sunlight.

Phones tend to get hot under direct sunlight, but since the iPhone 17 Pro is rumored to run cooler, screen brightness likely won’t be reduced intentionally to prevent overheating.

The phones will also have a more stable frame rate to ensure a better experience when playing games. This means that there will be no frame rate stuttering, even during times when the phone gets hot. This will seemingly be made possible by a dedicated cooling system.

The leaker also says that the phone’s video performance when shooting at 4K/60 will improve.

 

Lastly, the tipster claims that not only will the battery capacity increase, but the phones will also be more power-efficient, making them surpass all other iPhones in battery life. 

For reference, the iPhone 16 Pro Max sports a 4,685mAh battery, and its successor is rumored to pack a 5,000mAh cell. The iPhone 17 Pro is expected to inherit its predecessor’s 3,582mAh battery.

The iPhone 17 Pro might prove to be the most interesting release in a long time, given that it will not only flaunt a revamped design but also offer performance improvements and a better camera system.

Pixel 10’s most ambitious video feature is still frustrating to use

The promise of Video Boost

When it first introduced Video Boost, Google made it sound like the next big step in the future of smartphone video recording. By uploading your footage to Google’s cloud servers, the company’s powerful AI models would do their magic and send back a version that looked like it was shot and edited professionally: no noise, shadows lifted, highlights preserved, etc. Video Boost was also what enabled the so-called “Night Sight” mode for video, which was supposed to drastically improve nighttime video.

Whether you were filming in a dim bar, on a busy street at sunset, or under harsh indoor lighting, Video Boost would elevate the footage to a level no phone could match. At least in theory.

The reality check

The reality, as we found in our late 2023 testing, was messy at best. On the Pixel 8 Pro, processing even a 30-second clip with Video Boost took hours. A simple 90 MB video ballooned into a 1.2 GB file, quickly eating up storage.

Worse, boosted clips couldn’t always be transferred properly. Some lost their enhanced colors entirely once uploaded to Drive or YouTube. And despite being touted as a flagship feature, it only worked with the main camera — not the ultra-wide or telephoto, where it arguably could’ve made the biggest difference.Ironically, Video Boost did perform better in low-light scenarios. Footage came out brighter, cleaner, and less noisy, which was genuinely impressive. But in good lighting, the results often went sideways: shadows looked unnaturally lifted, highlights blew out, and colors — especially skin tones — turned out unnaturally saturated.

Our conclusion at the time was that the idea behind Video Boost was forward-thinking, but the execution felt clunky and half-baked.

Fast-forward to Pixel 10

Two years later, you’d expect Video Boost to be leaner, faster, and more integrated. After all, the Tensor G5 chip is Google’s first fully custom chip, capable of running complex AI models on-device. Except that’s not what we’re seeing when it comes to video.

In his recent Pixel 10 Pro XL camera test, Dave2D highlighted the same issues we are used to seeing: low-light video still lags behind the iPhone, dynamic range struggles with fire and bright light sources, and Video Boost remains cloud-dependent, because of which processing a clip took nearly 20 hours before it was ready.

That’s not the seamless experience people expect from their phone in 2025, especially not a flagship one. The whole point of a smartphone camera is instant capture and instant sharing. Nobody wants to record a family trip, wait a full day, and only then see the final version.

It looks bad when your expensive flagship phone needs 20 hours just to deliver similar level of video quality as your competition does without the need for any additional processing.

This disconnect is especially obvious because the Pixel is marketed as the camera-first smartphone. Google wants the Pixel 10 to be the device that creators and everyday users alike can rely on. Unfortunately, when it comes to video — a format more central than ever to how we communicate — the Pixel still feels inadequate.

The paradox of Video Boost and where it needs to go

After three generations, Video Boost still feels like a beta feature. Instead of solving Pixel’s long-standing video problem, it only underscores the gap between Google’s big vision and what its phones can actually deliver today.

Until Video Boost — or at least its benefits — is integrated directly into recording, works across all cameras, and avoids bloated files or cloud detours, the Pixel will remain a photographer’s phone, not a videographer’s. And in 2025, that’s a serious issue, because for most people, video is now the priority.

That doesn’t mean the feature is doomed. It just means Google has unfinished business. If future chips like the Tensor G6 or G7 finally bring Video Boost fully on-device, it could be genuinely transformative. Google seems to be heading in that direction — but until then, anyone serious about video will keep looking elsewhere.

TikTok employees raised concerns that app could be addictive, unsealed edited video shows

Newly unsealed and edited video shows TikTok employees and consultants expressing concern that potentially addictive features of the app could harm users’ mental health.

The video compilation, which was shared with CBS News by the North Carolina Department of Justice, is part of the evidence in a 2024 lawsuit the state’s former attorney general filed against TikTok alleging the company misled the public about the safety of the social media platform. 

North Carolina Special Superior Court Judge Adam Conrad on Tuesday ordered that the video and complaint be unsealed. In a separate ruling, he also denied a motion by TikTok’s parent company, China-based ByteDance, to dismiss the North Carolina lawsuit.

“These clips clearly show that social media companies know they’re designing their apps to hook our children even at the expense of their health,” said North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson in a statement to CBS News. “That’s why the company fought so hard to keep the video out of the public eye.”

In a statement to CBS MoneyWatch, a TikTok spokesperson called the video a “shameful attempt to distort an open internal conversation about making the platform safer when TikTok was just beginning five years ago.”

“This manipulation relies on conversations taken out of context with the sole purpose of misleading the public and grandstanding,” he added.

The spokesperson also said TikTok has over 70 features and settings designed to support the safety and well-being of teens and other app users. Those features include a 60-minute daily screen time limit and another that automatically triggers a guided meditation exercise after 10 p.m. for teen users scrolling on TikTok.

In a complaint issued in October 2024, former North Carolina Attorney General Joshua Stein alleged TikTok’s design fosters “excessive, compulsive and addictive use” and that the company knew about the harm it was causing. Stein also claimed TikTok ignored the addictive nature of the app “because their business model and desire for advertising revenue require keeping consumers on the app as much as possible.” 

The lawsuit is part of broader litigation brought by 14 state attorneys general last year over allegations that TikTok harms children’s mental health. Minnesota’s attorney general joined the fight this week with a separate lawsuit.

TikTok has denied the claims.

“We strongly disagree with these claims, many of which we believe to be inaccurate and misleading,”  a TikTok spokesperson said in a statement to CBS MoneyWatch at the time. “We’re proud of and remain deeply committed to the work we’ve done to protect teens and we will continue to update and improve our product.”

“Never want to leave”

The 3 1/2-minute video released this week features a series of clips of internal company meetings, with speakers describing what they viewed as harmful features of the TikTok app, including some that promote “compulsive use.” 

The meetings featured in the video took place a few years ago, according to a spokesperson for the North Carolina Department of Justice, who said they were unable to disclose the exact dates.

“We obviously wanted people to spend as much time as possible on TikTok, which can be in contrast to what is best for your mental health,” said Ally Mann, whose LinkedIn profile lists her as a creator marketing and events lead at TikTok.

In a separate clip, Ashlen Sepulveda, who is labeled in the video as working on trust and safety at the company, explains potential pitfalls of the TikTok algorithm that she said selects content based on users’ searches.

“Let’s say for eating disorders, for example,” Sepulveda said in the video. “The more the user looks up things about fitness or diet, it turns into losing weight and then soon enough the entire ‘for you’ feed for this user is really soft disordered eating behavior that is being discussed by their peers with no opportunity to remove themselves from that bubble.”

In another clip, Brett Peters, who according to his LinkedIn profile is global head of creator advocacy and reputation at TikTok, said TikTok’s goal is to produce such a diversity of content that “you never want to leave” the app. 

Sixty-three percent of teens said they used TikTok in 2023, according to a Pew Research Center poll. 

Meanwhile, TikTok continues to face an uncertain future as it stares down an approaching deadline, recently extended to Sept. 17 by President Trump, requiring the app to separate from its China-based parent company or be banned in the U.S.

The first video is a 30-second ad for the base model Pixel 10. The video starts by showing the Magic Cue feature in action. Magic Cue is a proactive, contextual assistant that figures out what information you need and delivers that information exactly when you need it. This is a key feature of Google’s “Personal Intelligence” vision for Gemini.

Other features seen in this 30-second video include Gemini Live. Users can share their camera or screen with the AI feature and have a conversation about it. Camera Coach gives the user directions such as “pan right” in order to help him or her compose a great photo.

The second video is for the Pixel 10 Pro and shows mostly the same features as the Pixel 10 video, such as Gemini Live and Camera Coach, although they are shown being used in different situations. The Pixel 10 Pro 30-second promo also mentions Video Boost. This feature sends the video shot by a Pixel user through Google’s servers where the clip is improved through its famous computational photography capabilities.

The Google Pixel Watch 4 brings Gemini with you, and having the AI chatbox on your wrist can be very helpful. Outside of seeing Gemini in action, the promo video for the timepiece focuses on using the device while working out and exercising. That’s because the Pixel Watch 4 will track your heart rate, the distance you’ve run, and more.
Next up, the video clip for the Pixel Buds 2a highlights features such as the “Twist-to-adjust” controls, Active Noise Cancellation, and hands-free Gemini. With the latter, you can ask Gemini to handle tasks such as “Create a workout playlist,” “Summarize my unread text messages,” and “Add a haircut at 5 to my calendar.

Google teases Pixel 10 AI features in video

I’m sure that I don’t have to tell you how important two letters are to smartphone manufacturers these days. The letters, “A” and “I” (which you’ll note I presented to you in alphabetical order), mean so much to smartphone buyers when done correctly. Google and Samsung haven’t written AI checks that their phones couldn’t cash. That is what Apple did with the hugely disappointing Apple Intelligence AI initiative.

Where Apple has gone wrong with Siri, Google has done right with Gemini

Where Apple went wrong is exactly where Google went right. Apple made promises about Siri’s AI capabilities at WWDC 2024, showing examples of how the digital assistant would look through your email, texts, calendar, and other apps to tell you what time your mom was supposed to land at the airport, and what time and where dinner reservations were made. Apple even went to the expense of shooting an ad showing how this “Personal” Siri would come to the rescue of a teen iPhone user who couldn’t remember the name of the guy she had just met and had an interest in.

Apple had to pull the ad once it became clear that “Personal” Siri might not arrive until next year.  For those of you who have used Google’s Gemini app, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, or any of the AI chatbox apps, it is so clear that they are the future of the digital assistant. Google has a head start as it is replacing Google Assistant with Gemini. I’ve been using Gemini as the assistant on my Pixel 6 Pro, and I love it. It answers my queries with responses that allow you to take a deeper dive if you wish to.
AI is much more than a chatbox looking to answer your questions. I really wouldn’t say that Google, Samsung, or Apple have done a good job to promote these other capabilities. Google, however, has released a teaser revealing some of the AI features already available on Pixel phones that will still be available for the Pixel 10 series. I guess that really doesn’t make it much of a teaser. It starts with a question that makes you think: “What if your phone could do things other phones couldn’t?” 

For example, “What if the camera could get super, super, super close while being really, really, really far?” This refers to Super Res Zoom, which is a feature that uses computational photography and AI to enhance and add detail to zoomed-in photos of people or animals physically far away, making it appear as though you were right in front of them. This would be a great AI feature for those watching performers on a stage, while sitting in the cheap seats.

Google teases a couple of AI features that will be available on the Pixel 10 series

The next question, “What if you could be in the group photo even if you snapped the group photo?” is about the feature “Add Me.” Let’s say you want to take a group photo and add yourself to the photograph later. With “Add Me,” you take the shot of the group, making sure to leave room for yourself. Someone else takes a second photo of just you. AI seamlessly merges the two photos together, making it appear as though you were in the original shot to begin with even though you took the picture.

Google then says, “While you used to be on the other side of the camera, now the camera is on your side.” The teaser ends with this deep thought, “What if you asked more of your phone and your phone answered?” 

We should learn more about the AI capabilities of the Pixel 10 series this coming Wednesday, August 20, when the “Made by Google” event takes place and the Pixel 10 line is unveiled. Besides the phones, we should see the Pixel Watch 4 introduced along with the more affordable Pixel Buds 2a.
