Why the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra could pass for a laptop?

For years, tech companies have teased us with the idea of one device that does it all. With the Tab S11 Ultra, Samsung might be closer than ever. Between the hardware, the software tweaks, and the accessories that extend its functionality, this is the most serious “laptop replacement” attempt Samsung has made yet.DeX is the star here. On the Tab S11 Ultra’s massive 14.6-inch screen, it reshapes Android into something that looks and behaves like a desktop OS. You can drag around resizable windows, work with a taskbar, and even connect a mouse and keyboard (Samsung’s Book Cover Keyboard makes it feel a lot more natural).Then there’s the S Pen. This stylus is something most laptops can’t compete with. It’s perfect for note-taking, sketching, or marking up documents on the fly, which makes it gold for students, designers, or professionals who need precision input.

Portability is another win. Despite the huge display, the Tab S11 Ultra is impressively slim and lightweight. It’s way easier to carry than even the thinnest laptops, which makes it perfect if you’re someone who moves around a lot between desks, meetings, or cities.

DeX itself has also grown up. You can even run it on an external monitor by plugging in via USB-C and pairing a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. You won’t get every little quirk ironed out – text selection can still be awkward, and the mouse pointer doesn’t always behave exactly like it does on a PC – but it’s surprisingly workable.

And if you want to dig into why this matters for the future, my colleague has already argued that “the future is in Desktop Experience,” and honestly, I can see why.

Where laptops still have the upper hand

Of course, as good as the Tab S11 Ultra is, it’s not a silver bullet. There are some things a traditional laptop still does better – and in some cases, only a laptop can do.For one, software. Sure, Android apps are way better optimized for DeX now than in the early days, but if you rely on professional desktop-only programs – like full video editing suites, engineering tools, or certain coding environments – you’ll still hit a wall. Android just doesn’t offer those options yet.

That ties into the OS itself. DeX makes Android look like Windows, but it’s still Android underneath. You can’t run .exe files or tap into deep system-level functions the way you can on Windows or macOS. For power users, developers, or IT pros, that’s a hard stop.

Connectivity is another weak spot. A laptop gives you ports – USB-A, HDMI, Ethernet – right out of the box. The Tab S11 Ultra? You’ll need dongles or a hub, and that can get messy fast.

File management has improved, but Android’s file system still isn’t as robust as a laptop’s. Moving big chunks of data between apps can feel clunky compared to the smooth drag-and-drop you’d expect on a PC.

And finally, cost. On paper, the Tab S11 Ultra looks like a laptop alternative. But add the Book Cover Keyboard, maybe a monitor, and a hub for all your accessories, and suddenly you’re spending the same – or even more – than you would on a solid flagship laptop.

So, can it really replace your laptop?

Here’s my bottom line: the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra, with DeX, absolutely can replace a laptop for a lot of people – but not for everyone.

For students, casual users, and even many professionals whose daily work revolves around web browsing, emails, editing documents, or streaming content, this tablet could easily be your one and only machine. It’s light, powerful, and versatile.For creatives, the answer’s a bit mixed. The S Pen and the giant display make it a dream for sketching and design work. But if your workflow depends on specialized desktop apps, you’ll still need a traditional computer on standby.

And for hardcore power users, programmers, or anyone who pushes their machines with heavy-duty apps, the answer leans toward “no.” The Tab S11 Ultra is fast – it’s running on MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400+ – but that chip isn’t going to handle everything a pro-level Windows laptop or Mac can do.

So yes, the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra can step in as a laptop replacement – but only if what you need is flexibility and light productivity, not heavy-duty power or specialized software. And then there’s the price: it starts at $1,199.99. That’s not exactly cheap. For context, you can snag a MacBook Air with Apple’s blazing-fast M4 chip for about $200 less, or pick up a capable Dell laptop in the same price range that’ll give you full desktop software and ports without the extra accessories.

Okay, so the “vanilla” Tab S11 is not quite as expensive as the 12.4-inch Tab S10 Plus for… obvious reasons. But $799.99 just so happened to be the starting price of the 11-inch Galaxy Tab S9 back in 2023, so it’s definitely not surprising to see that figure go unchanged two years later for an entry-level 128GB storage configuration sans cellular connectivity.

The Tab S11 will probably be cheaper than the Tab S10 Plus, but just as expensive as the Tab S9 at launch.

As you may have guessed already, all the above tags are good for Wi-Fi-only variants, although the prices of their 5G-capable counterparts are not exactly hard to figure out. Then again, if history is any indication, the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra might not be released stateside with built-in cellular support, so that guessing game could end up being rather pointless.

What’s certainly worth pointing out is that the most affordable Tab S11 Ultra model is likely to cost about as much as an entry-level 13-inch iPad Pro (2024). The “regular” Galaxy Tab S11, meanwhile, will probably undercut the Apple M4-powered iPad Pro 11 by a couple of hundred bucks, but with a MediaTek Dimensity 9400 processor under the hood, that gap might not prove large enough to make this thing a smart buy.

Now, I’m not saying the Dimensity 9400 is a pushover… per se, but it’s clearly not as fast as an Apple M4… or the Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC found inside the cheaper OnePlus Pad 3.

You should probably wait a couple of months

Because I don’t want to end my little article today on a negative note, I’m going to let you in on a secret. If you won’t rush to Samsung’s official US e-store to order the Galaxy Tab S11 or Tab S11 Ultra as soon as they’re released, you will likely be able to get your favorite model at a much easier-to-stomach price in a few months.

And here’s the thing – these are not bad products by any measure of the word. In fact, they will almost surely leap to the very top of our best Android tablet list immediately after their commercial debut, undoubtedly shining in the screen quality department and offering excellent battery life… for such remarkably thin and lightweight devices.

So, yes, I believe patience is advised when dealing with these next-gen iPad Pro alternatives, although if you have something (good) to trade in, it might be a good idea to check out Samsung’s introductory offers as well. Stay tuned for those following tomorrow’s launch event!

Leaked Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra benchmarks show how much Samsung is willing to improve its hardware

Samsung has just unveiled the Galaxy Tab S11 Lite, but we expect it to premiere two more tablets during the September 4 event it just announced. We’ve already heard numerous rumors about the new devices, but now we also have extensive benchmark results for the upcoming Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra.

Just like previously rumored, the flagship tablet Samsung is about to launch may be powered by the Dimensity 9400+ chipset. That becomes clear from the specs of the chip tested(translated source) by Greek outlet Techmaniacs, which has a Cortex-X925 core clocked at 3.73 GHz. On the original Dimensity 9400, that core works at 3.63 GHz. The Device Info HW app also clears out the rest of the specs, which you can see in the following image:

As for the actual benchmarks, we see results from Geekbench 6.4.0, reaching respectable 2,474 points in single-core and 8,721 points in multi-core tasks. In case you need a reference, the Dimensity 9300+ inside the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra scores 2,111 points in the single-core and 7,319 points in the multi-core test.

While those scores sound impressive, they’re way behind Samsung’s main competitor – the iPad Pro M4. Apple’s top-tier tablet blasts through Geekbench’s benchmarks with 3,720 points in the single-core and 13,280 points in the multi-core tests.

On September 4, Samsung is likely to announce the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra, as well as a base Galaxy Tab S11 model. The same event is also expected to serve as the premiere of the Galaxy S25 FE.

Samsung’s ultra-premium tablet is expected to feature the same 14.6-inch OLED display as its predecessor and a slightly larger 11,600 mAh battery with 45W fast-charging support. That battery increase is particularly impressive as the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra is also rumored to be thinner than last year’s model and to measure just 5.1 mm thick.

The leaked pricing suggests that the Tab S11 Ultra may start at $1,200 for a 12/256GB variant and reach $1,700 for the 16GB/1TB variant with WiFi connectivity.

While Lenovo sells a ton of very interesting tablets at very interesting prices in the US, the Yoga Tab Plus caught my eye like few other Android devices on the market when it became available (practically out of nowhere) back in January at a reasonable $699.99.

Now, I know that might seem steep by typical mid-range standards, but with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor under the hood, this is a decidedly high-end model (with a decidedly gargantuan 12.7-inch touchscreen), so at worst, that launch price could be deemed as fair.

But I ultimately decided to wait just a little bit longer, and now that waiting is paying off handsomely thanks to a deeper-than-ever $247.50 price cut. Even though I’m a fan of round numbers, I’m not sure I’ll be able to resist getting the Yoga Tab Plus at an odd but incredibly appealing $522.49.

I know, I know, that’s a tad higher than the current price of something like the Apple M3-powered iPad Air 11 (2025) in an entry-level 128GB storage configuration, but that’s because the Yoga Tab Plus can accommodate twice as much data internally, and far more importantly, because its $522.49 price includes both a stylus and a keyboard in addition to the slate itself.

As a fan of the traditional Windows laptop experience, I cannot recommend that kind of productivity-enhancing bundle strongly enough… even if Android is perhaps still not a perfect OS for work purposes. On top of everything else, I love that the Lenovo Yoga Tab Plus supports 144Hz display refresh rate technology, which means that my games and favorite Netflix shows will be silky smooth, making it quite hard (in a good way) to get things done while traveling.

Oh, and did I mention that this bad boy also comes with no less than six Harman Kardon speakers? That’s the stuff dreams are made of, and I urge you to join me in taking advantage of the latest Lenovo.com “doorbuster” deal. Let’s just hope the e-store’s “doors” will be able to contain us all.
