The nonprofit Every Cure is using AI to look for opportunities to repurpose medications already on the market to treat rare illnesses. President and co-founder Dr. David Fajgenbaum explains his personal inspiration for the nonprofit.

Why basic science deserves our boldest investment
—Julia R. Greer is a materials scientist at the California Institute of Technology, a judge for MIT Technology Review’s Innovators Under 35 and a former honoree (in 2008).
A modern chip the size of a human fingernail contains tens of billions of silicon transistors, each measured in nanometers—smaller than many viruses. These tiny switches form the infrastructure behind nearly every digital device in use today.
Much of the fundamental understanding that moved transistor technology forward came from federally funded university research. But that funding is under increasing pressure, thanks to deep budget cuts proposed by the White House.
These losses have forced some universities to freeze graduate student admissions, cancel internships, and scale back summer research opportunities—making it harder for young people to pursue scientific and engineering careers.

If you feel like your heart might explode if you have to wait until tomorrow to find out all the official iPhone 17, 17 Air, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max details… Apple is willing to share at the handset family’s launch event, I’ve got a very special treat for you today. The entire lineup’s battery capacity figures have leaked out at the eleventh hour, and all four seven of them are higher than anyone expected or predicted based on previous inside information or educated guesswork.
Solid (and surprising) upgrades across the board
If you’ve been following the rumblings of the iPhone 17 series rumor mill all these months, you probably know battery life was not among the areas predicted for a major improvement over the iPhone 16 roster by many reliable tipsters or pundits because, well, that’s not how Apple typically operates.
But here we are today, looking at the below numbers that are just about etched in stone and noticing quite a few interesting details.
iPhone 17 series battery capacity
3,692mAh – base model;
3,036mAh – iPhone 17 Air;
3,149mAh – iPhone 17 Air (eSIM);
3,988mAh – iPhone 17 Pro;
4,252mAh – iPhone 17 Pro (eSIM);
4,823mAh – iPhone 17 Pro Max;
5,088mAh – iPhone 17 Pro Max (eSIM).
iPhone 16 series battery capacity
3,561mAh – base model;
4,674mAh – iPhone 16 Plus;
3,582mAh – iPhone 16 Pro;
4,685mAh – iPhone 16 Pro Max.
You don’t have to be a math whiz to tell that the numbers in the first list will surpass the ones in the second list by quite a bit… with one notable exception. The ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air unsurprisingly packs a much smaller battery than the iPhone 16 Plus it’s technically meant to replace in Apple’s lineup, although even in that case, the 3,036 and 3,149mAh capacities tipped today are considerably higher than what previous reports suggested for the company’s Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge rival.
Another very important detail to highlight (that’s also very easy to notice) is that cell size will differ for the first time between the “standard” and eSIM versions of Apple’s new iPhones… with the exception of the “vanilla” iPhone 17. That means some iPhone 17 Air, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max users might be able to squeeze better battery endurance scores out of their handsets than other owners of the same devices, but more importantly, it means that some models will offer truly significant upgrades in this department over their predecessors.
iPhone 17 series vs the competition
Should I even go there? Fine, I’ll go there. These are the battery capacity figures of some of the iPhone 17 family’s key rivals around:
Samsung Galaxy S25 – 4,000mAh;
Galaxy S25 Plus – 4,900mAh;
Galaxy S25 Ultra – 5,000mAh;
Galaxy S25 Edge – 3,900mAh;
Google Pixel 10 – 4,970mAh;
Pixel 10 Pro XL – 5,200mAh;
Pixel 9a – 5,100mAh;
OnePlus 13 – 6,000mAh;
Motorola Edge (2025) – 5,200mAh;
Motorola Razr (2025) – 4,500mAh.
If you’re a hardcore Apple fan, your excitement from just about a minute ago may have been reduced to a minimum all of a sudden. But if you’ve ever watched an iPhone announcement event or tried to find an iPhone’s spec sheet on its manufacturer’s official website, you’ve surely noticed that the company never advertises their battery size numbers.

That’s not because the company is ashamed with said numbers, mind you, but because… they’re really not that important. Our iPhone 16 Pro Max review, for instance, put the jumbo-sized device above the Pixel 9 Pro XL and roughly on par with the Galaxy S24 Ultra in battery life, and believe it or not, our OnePlus 13 review found that 6,000mAh cell-packing beast to be inferior to the iPhone 16 Pro Max in that field.
So should you or should you not be excited about the iPhone 17 family’s battery life?
If you ask me, you totally should. Now, I can’t promise you that the iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max will deliver the absolute highest real-world battery endurance numbers among the best phones available this holiday season, but I can just about guarantee that they’ll improve on the already very solid 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max in that crucial department (as well as a bunch of others).

The same should be true for the “regular” iPhone 17 compared to the iPhone 16 (albeit to a smaller degree), while the iPhone 17 Air is likely to… not be as poor a performer as practically everyone expected prior to today.
With Apple’s famous energy efficiency optimizations taken into consideration, I could even see the first-of-a-kind ultra-thin iPhone beat the slightly thicker Galaxy S25 Edge in real-world battery life, which would be a major blow to Samsung’s hopes of fending off the latest and greatest iPhone family at the global box-office.

In 2012, Ji launched his own company, Peak Labs, and later led the development of Magi, a search engine. The tool extracted information from across the web to answer queries—conceptually similar to today’s AI-powered search, but powered by a custom language model.
Magi was briefly popular, drawing millions of users in its first month, but consumer adoption didn’t stick. It did, however, attract enterprise interest, and Ji adapted it for B2B use, before selling it in 2022.
AI acumen
Manus would become his next act—and a more ambitious one. His cofounders, Zhang Tao and Xiao Hong, complement Ji’s technical core with product know-how, storytelling, and organizational savvy. Both Xiao and Ji are serial entrepreneurs who have been backed by venture capital firm ZhenFund multiple times. Together, they represent the kind of long-term collaboration and international ambition that increasingly defines China’s next wave of entrepreneurs.

People who have worked with Ji describe him as a clear thinker, a fast talker, and a tireless, deeply committed builder who thinks in systems, products, and user flows. He represents a new generation of Chinese technologists: equally at home coding or in pitch meetings, fluent in both building and branding. He’s also a product of open-source culture, and remains an active contributor whose projects regularly garner attention—and GitHub stars—across developer communities.
With new funding led by US venture capital firm Benchmark, Ji and his team are taking Manus to the wider world, relocating operations outside of China, to Singapore, and actively targeting consumers around the world. The product is built on US-based infrastructure, drawing on technologies like Claude Sonnet, Microsoft Azure, and open-source tools such as Browser Use. It’s a distinctly global setup: an AI agent developed by a Chinese team, powered by Western platforms, and designed for international users. That isn’t incidental; it reflects the more fluid nature of AI entrepreneurship today, where talent, infrastructure, and ambition move across borders just as quickly as the technology itself.
For Ji, the goal isn’t just building a global company—it’s building a legacy. “I hope Manus is the last product I’ll ever build,” Ji says. “Because if I ever have another wild idea—(I’ll just) leave it to Manus!”
The end of September’s first week brings along great news: all those who fly with Southwest Airlines will enjoy free, unlimited Wi-Fi. The only detail is that people who want to take advantage of the new offering should be Rapid Rewards members.
Rapid Rewards is Southwest Airlines’ frequent flyer program. When someone signs up as a member, they earn points every time they fly with Southwest or make purchases through the airline’s partners, such as hotels, car rentals, dining, or credit cards.
Those points can then be redeemed for flights, seat upgrades, hotel stays, gift cards, and other rewards. Unlike some programs that use blackout dates, Southwest allows members to use their points on any available flight.
Southwest Airlines and T-Mobile’s new partnership will kick off beginning October 24, 2025 – and the best part is that free Wi-Fi will be available on all flights. This is the first collaboration between the two companies.

By rolling out this program across its fleet of more than 800 aircraft, Southwest will become the largest domestic airline to offer complimentary Wi-Fi on every flight this year. The benefit will be available to all Rapid Rewards members, regardless of which wireless carrier they use, for the full duration of their journey. This is great news as well.Southwest emphasized that the initiative is part of its broader effort to enhance the passenger experience from booking to arrival, with Wi-Fi being one of several upgrades customers can expect in the coming months.
To access the new benefit, travelers only need to enroll in Rapid Rewards, which can be done either before departure or while onboard.
In-flight Wi-Fi can be a game-changer for both work and leisure. Travelers can check emails, join virtual meetings (never miss those Zoom calls), or just make use of time that would otherwise be offline.

Without a doubt, the late Steve Jobs was not a fan of the stylus. How do we know that? Well, he made it crystal clear that day in January 2007 at Macworld when he held the iPhone aloft, introduced the new device, and literally changed the world. When discussing how users will communicate with the iPhone, he said, “Who wants a stylus? You have to get ’em, put ’em away, you lose ’em. Yuck! Nobody wants a stylus. So let’s not use a stylus.”
The first major smartphone to ship with a stylus after Jobs’ comment was the HTC Touch, which was released in June 2007. But it wasn’t until Samsung released the Galaxy Note in 2011 that the stylus became a feature. Samsung called its digital writing instrument the S Pen. Over time, the S Pen became much more powerful with capabilities not found on a regular stylus. The new S Pen combines technology with what Samsung calls “A human-centered design.”
Samsung has released a video called “The S Pen Story” timed to accompany the release of the Galaxy Tab S11 tablet last week. In fact, all of the illustrations created for the video were produced with the S Pen and the Galaxy Tab S11. The video reveals that Samsung’s goal with the S Pen was to make it resemble the ordinary pencil. “So simple. Yet powerful,” Sammy says. As the pencil brings ideas to life, so does the S Pen. The next-gen S Pen features an enhanced grip designed to feel familiar, like a pencil.
The next-gen S Pen is optimized for drawing as the pen tip is shaped like a cone and is tilted at a greater angle, which could help users create better sketches. The harder you press, the darker the strokes. Also improved is the durability of the S Pen. Samsung has redesigned its internals, and the S Pen is stronger and more durable.
I must add that some of the comments from those who viewed the video are interesting. “You forgot to add the part where you downgrade and remove the Bluetooth features on this generation,” wrote one disgruntled S Pen user. Another wrote, “The AUDACITY to say this, after removing Bluetooth from S Pen in S25U and now Tab S11U. Ridiculous. At least give users a choice to buy it if they want it.”
The S Pen did change the way people looked at the stylus, which makes us wonder whether Steve Jobs would have been more open to a stylus with the capabilities of the S Pen. As for the Apple Pencil, well, that was released nearly four years after Jobs’ death.

Over the last few weeks, we have seen several T-Mobile reps call it quits because of the T-Life app. These aren’t new hires who became overwhelmed by the job, but are salesmen and women who have had enough with the pressure they face from having to meet certain goals each month. Add to that the new requirement put in place by T-Mobile that forces reps to use the T-Life app to handle a certain percentage of the transactions they handle. If a rep fails to meet that target, he could be let go.
T-Mobile has started the process of transitioning to an all-digital wireless provider
One rep who just walked out posted his farewell on social media. “Resigned after 8.5 years of hard work and dedication to this company. TMO isn’t a career anymore, but a shitty job with glorified benefits to keep you around, which most companies offer nowadays. T-Life push is unreal for the front-line employees. Another way of taking money from my reps. As a manager, I’ve heard things about how it’s going to get worse.”

Another former rep wrote, “I quit after 6 years because of T-Life as well. I ran a successful store, had a great team, and worked for the best market manager I’ve ever met. It still wasn’t enough after T-Life. T-Life was created to thin the ranks; mission accomplished. But it’s only the good people leaving.”
It’s quite obvious what is going to happen to T-Mobile. The current T-Life push is forcing more customers to use T-Life, which means they get used to turning to the app to manage their accounts, upgrade their phones, and add new lines. Putting pressure on the reps results in more of them leaving, and eventually the company will sell off stores and axe the remaining sales crew. The rumors about the imminent departure of CEO Mike Sievert might also play into this as well.
Even if Sievert leaves, he would depart with his T-Mobile shares. The CEO recently sold 22,500 shares for an approximate value of $5.63 million based on a current share price of $250. The executive now owns 336,222 shares worth roughly $84 million. Should T-Mobile transition into a digital carrier, you could see its stock rise even more, as profits should rise without the stores and reps’ commissions creating a huge overhead.
T-Mobile would become all-digital, similar to Verizon’s Visible. There is a big difference. T-Mobile will still own all of its wireless infrastructure, including spectrum and cell towers. Visible, on the other hand, is an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) without a wireless network infrastructure. Visible buys its wireless service wholesale from parent company Verizon and sells it to the public.
T-Mobile has created quite a legacy for itself over the last few years
There has been no official pronouncement that T-Mobile is going all-digital but the tell-tale signs are there. The carrier has had an amazing run since 2012, when John Legere was named CEO. Legere turned T-Mobile into the nation’s most innovative and fastest-growing wireless provider. T-Mobile got rid of subsidized phones and two-year contracts, created the Un-carrier name to set it apart from AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon, and offered perks such as free Netflix, a reward program titled T-Mobile Tuesday, and more.
Under Legere, T-Mobile made a big decision that still resonates to this day. Unlike Verizon and AT&T, T-Mobile decided to use mid-band spectrum to build out its 5G network. Verizon and AT&T went for the faster mmWave airwaves but didn’t consider that high-band signals travel only short distances. T-Mobile coveted Sprint’s hoard of 2.5GHz spectrum for its 5G build out, which led to the $26.5 billion acquisition of Sprint. T-Mobile‘s decision to go with mid-band helped it become the early U.S. leader in 5G and led Verizon and AT&T to spend billions on mid-band spectrum in the C-band.
Now it seems that T-Mobile is becoming something that is unrecognizable, even to someone who has followed the carrier over the last 16 years.

What’s not to like about Google Maps? The app gives you spoken turn-by-turn directions to get you safely and quickly to your destination. Google has improved these directions by following Apple Maps, and like the latter, now uses traffic lights and stop signs as landmarks telling you where to make a turn. Previously, you might have heard that you need to make a left turn in a quarter of a mile. Now, Google Maps might tell you that you’ll be making a left turn at the next stop sign or at the second traffic light.
Google Maps search results will take you to stores and restaurants that are closed
Once you arrive at your destination, Google Maps can help you find a place to eat, sleep, find entertainment, get gas, and more. But there is one thing about Google Maps that has Reddit users up in arms, requesting a change. Right now, when you’re searching for a restaurant or a specific store, say “UPS near me,” there is a filter close to the top of the place sheet (I call it the result card), and one of the choices is “Open now.”

That’s a pretty self-explanatory description of what that button will do when tapped on. You’ll see the results of your search for a nearby UPS location, but only those that are open at the moment. But suppose you are already driving on an active route and want to add an additional destination by tapping the “add stops” button, You’ll see while driving, there is no way to filter the location by tapping the “Open now” button.
So let’s say that you’re driving somewhere and you realize that your caffeine tank is low. You remember the name of a coffee shop along the way to your destination, and while it might add a few minutes to your drive, you add the stop to your active route. You get to the place, and you notice that it looks dark. So you try the front door anyway, and it’s locked. You look at the sign on the window and you realize that the store closed an hour ago, well before you typed the address in the app.
One Redditor had a good solution that Google should implement
The thing is, when a place sheet (aka result card) pops up on the display after a search is initiated, it will typically show the hours of operation, However, it is easy to miss, or you might not know exactly what the current time is. And yes, this situation really does take place in real life. Android Police’s Sanuj Bhatia wrote about his experience on his trip to Vietnam. He would walk or drive to restaurants recommended by Google Maps that had great reviews. However, by the time he arrived at the locations, they were closed.
One solution came from a Reddit subscriber who closed his post with a good idea: “I understand it having an “Open now” toggle on the standard map search (makes sense, you might be looking for something immediately OR for later) but if I am on an active route and using the along-route search tool, I ALWAYS need these results to be “Open now” It is so useless when driving home after work and most of the “restaurant” results are CLOSED – what’s the point of showing that result? I almost think that along-route search function should DEFAULT to “Open now”… since you are clearly navigating in real time…”
Unless Google follows the above suggestion, what you can do is check the “Open now” filter when typing in a location you need directions for. But once you’re on an active route and type in a last-second location, it is best to check the hours of operation of the place you typed into the Google Maps search bar lest you add to your drive for nothing.

AI was cool when ChatGPT was first introduced. It’s still cool, but not brag-worthy cool. For some reason, Google wants to milk this trend as long as it can, but it’s getting a little off-putting now. That’s why I am glad that the iPhone 17 will be a hardware-centric upgrade.
The Pixel 10 is forcing AI on you while slacking in the specs department
While Google should be commended for rapidly shipping innovative AI features, it’s also important to remember that most people don’t buy a new phone for AI features alone.The Pixel 10’s Magic Cue feature fetches important information for you, such as the address of a venue you are discussing in a chat. It can also read out translations now, attempting to make a phone conversation between two people who speak different languages smoother.
It’s an underwhelming update, even taking a step backward in some core features. The iPhone 17 will take a completely different approach, in a snub to the Pixel 10.

The iPhone 17 Pro is likely to offer a 48MP telephoto camera with up to 8x optical zoom. The Pixel 10 Pro maxes out at 5x optical zoom, which, in all fairness, is probably enough for most users.The Pixel 10 Pro uses AI for clearer photos when you zoom past 30x. It allows you to reach up to 100x, using AI to imagine the details not captured by the camera. While this seems to work fine with predictable subjects, the feature trips up when faced with something it can’t recognise.
The iPhone 17 Pro, on the other hand, will come with an upgraded telephoto camera with a moving element. The use of a moving lens will likely enable continuous optical zoom, with two distinct zoom ranges supported.
Apple’s approach seems more practical. The iPhone 17 Pro may not let you zoom all the way to 100x; its hardware-based approach will ensure higher-quality, more authentic-looking images.
No compromise on performance
I think it’s okay if your phone doesn’t have the latest and greatest AI features built in, as you can almost always find apps for that. What cannot be enhanced, though, is your device’s performance.
iPhones have always been one of the fastest phones around. The iPhone 17 Pro will not only come with a faster chip, but it will also have a vapor chamber system for the first time to ensure that performance isn’t dialed back to keep the internal components from getting hot.
This implies that the performance disparity between the iPhone and Google Pixel is only going to increase. And while the Pixel 10 may feel fast enough for now, it may start struggling three or four years down the road.

I don’t think you should consider buying the iPhone 17 Air unless you think a thinner device will significantly improve how you use the phone. After all, the phone is expected to have disappointing battery and camera specs.
It will still be an important device and demonstrate Apple’s willingness to cater to a very specific demographic. With time, the iPhone Air model will improve enough to be recommended by most people.
Apple could have stuck to a safe formula of offering standard and Plus models like Google, but it chose to spice things up in its own little way.
Hardware reigns supreme
AI has become an indispensable tool in everyday life. Most users would rather show their private messages to you than their ChatGPT history. That’s how much we have started relying on AI chatbots, even though some skeptics say AI will be the end of us.
AI hasn’t changed how we use our smartphones, though. The features Google has introduced sound good in theory, but most of them will likely be forgotten after the initial ooh-aah.
The iPhone 17, on the other hand, will be a reliable piece of hardware that will keep up with your demands for the entirety of its software life. That’s what I call a solid upgrade.
